Paulina del Paso is a filmmaker and visual artist that navigates between classic and experimental narratives in documentary and fiction, along with video installations and photography.
Direction
Paulina del Paso started her studies at the Television and Video department of the University of Guadalajara Mexico where she took classes with Guillermo del Toro. In 1994 she made her first experimental short Look but don’t touch which was screened on national television as part of the program It happened in Guadalajara Produced by Bertha Navarro and Alejandro Springall. She then went on to study film Directing at the prestigious Mexican Film School Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica from which she graduated with honors. Her professional career debuts in 2005 directing and editing documentaries for the Mexico Nuevo Siglo. To this date she continues to direct documentaries for national TV including a series of portraits for the series Forgotten Masters (Maestros Olvidados) where she filmed a Family of embalmers and Noctambules (Noctámbulos) where she filmed a night in the life of a paramedic. In 2011 she presented her Documentary Feature debut The Warrior (La Guerrera) the portrait of a female boxer from a poor Mexican neighborhood, which won the Renew Media Grant and the Ambulante Cuauhtémoc grant as well as Best Documentary Award at the Zanate Film Festival 2011.
Script writing
Paulina del Paso has written the scripts for all her short films and co wr0te Fragments, her 35mm short, with filmmaker René Peñaloza Galván. She has also developed the ideas and structure of various documentaries. In 2018 she wrote and directed the animation All of us for the World Justice Project. She is now in the process of writing her fiction feature debut project Skin Deep in collaboration with filmmaker Elisa Miller.
Film editing
Paulina del Paso has edited most of the films she has directed. In The Warrior she co-edited along side Mexican film editor Yibrán Asuad. She edited the documentary About Sarah by Elisa Miller, The Scarecrow by Ricardo del Conde and the multi prize winner The Tinniest Place by Tatiana Huezo, among other short documentaries. She is now in the process of editing the documentary feature I broke away from the sun by Katri Walker.
Paulina del Paso divides her time between directing, editing and giving classes as well as mentoring diverse film projects in development and editing stages.
